Monofinning, the Sport

Monofinning is a new sport to the USA. It originally began in Russia and Eastern block countries as a training device for swimming. But, this is not a history lessons.
BASICALLY, you stick your feet in this thing, plop in the water, and MOOOOOOOOVE really really FAST! The monofinner typically holds a tight streamline position (hands extended in front of their body) and uses a center-mounted snorkel for breathing. Just to give you an idea of relative speeds, the world record for the 50m Freestyle is approximately 22 seconds. For a 50m Apnea (no breath!) monofin, it is 14 seconds. BIG DIFFERENCE! (The American record is only 18 seconds.)
OTHER EVENTS include the 100, 200, 800 and 1500 submersion (you carry a pony bottle for air and can NOT break the surface). There are also surface swim events for the longer distances.
WORLD TRIALS will be held during the summer of 1996 in Budapest, Hungary. The US National Team will be attending the games.
